Anyone of us with a Facebook Page has a compulsion to get more likes! Why? Because more likes gives the impression we are more popular. But if you get more likes the wrong way it’s a false impression!
What’s the wrong way, long term, to get more likes?
Buying likes to get more likes: In most cases you are just getting a bunch of people from somewhere in the world that could care less about engaging with you or buying your products.
Likes Club & exchanges to get more likes: You may get a little more engagement from the first like but again, since there’s probably no real interest in buying from that initial engagement is short lived.
Inviting friends and family to get more likes gets the same result
Now let me contradict myself for a minute. The reason it’s important to get more likes initially is for Social Proof. When people come to your page, if they don’t see anyone “likes” your page it has a negative impact. Stats show that once you’re over 500 “like” you start getting better quality likes and more engagement. So in my opinion it’s ok to start by buying likes, joining like clubs or inviting friends even if not the best target audience, till you get up to the 500 mark.
The ultimate goal, however, is to get engagement. Engagement comes from people that are participating on your page. You will get more likes and engagement by offering content that people need and want. Facebook gives you to analytics with FB Insights that help you analyze this: “Reach” and “Talking about this”.
Reach goes up when you get more “likes” and Talking about this is from engagement. The numbers that you see in Insights are delayed by two (2) days and represent activity for the 7 days prior to that. A little confusing I know. Facebook “likes” go up in real time so you’d think that Insights could be done the same way in true Facebook style, they love to mess with your mind!!
So here are the metrics that Facebook counts as engagement. If someone comes to you page and “like” it, posts, makes a comment all on the same visit, it only counts as 1 “talking about this” or reached. If they come back more than once then each time they come back counts as 1 each time. Here’s what someone has to do to count as engagement:
- “like” your page
- Post something on your wall
- Like a post.
- Comment on a post
- Share a post
- Participate in a poll
- Respond to an event
- They mention the page in their post
- They tag your page in a photo
- Share a check-in deal
- Like a check-in deal
- Write a recommendation for your page
So how do you get more engagement so you get more likes from potential buyers? You have to be strategic about you content to get more quality likes.
- Start a poll and ask questions
- Share quality content: relevant, captivating, make ‘em laugh, add picts and videos
- Put a call to action in the post. Point them to you welcome or sales page
- Share you life and be personable and personal (with some limits)
- Share during the peak hours: 7-9 am, 12:00-1:00 pm, 5:00-9:00 pm (test to verify for your area)
