FaceBook Profile Or Pages? Never Use Your Profile Page For Business & What To Do If You’ve Already Screwed It Up!

WATCH OUT IF YOU’RE USING A FACEBOOK PROFILE PAGE AS A BUSINESS PAGE!

First of all it’s against FaceBook’s policy, which clearly states that if you use a personal profile page as a business page they can shut you down and you’ll lose all your friends and information.  This is a strict no no!!  You may not get caught but what if you do and you have 2000 or 3000 “friends” and you lose them with no way to contact them to tell you where you are now; is it worth the risk?

The fact is you also lose a lot of business functionality and marketing benefits by not having both a personal profile to gather friends and a business page with which to invite those friends and promote to them.  Here’s what FaceBook has to say:

“Business accounts are designed for individuals who only want to use the site to administer Pages and their ad campaigns. For this reason, business accounts do not have the same functionality as personal accounts. Business accounts have limited access to information on the site. An individual with a business account can view all the Pages and Facebook Ads that they have created, however they will not be able to view the profiles of users on the site or other content on the site that does not live on the Pages they administer. In addition, business accounts cannot be found in search and cannot send or receive friend requests.”

Also something they don’t mention is that you lose a lot of SEO “juice” by not having a business page as Google, Bing and others index these pages and help you boost your page ranking.  In addition, as mentioned above, you can’t administrate a page without having a profile page.

So overall it’s in your best interests to set up a personal profile and from there a business “like” or what used to be called, a “fan” page.

So what if you’ve already screwed it up?  You can convert.

Here’s how to convert your profile page to a business page.

Before you start bear in mind that you will lose your information if you don’t save it so you first you need to download all your profile data.  ONCE YOU CONVET TO A BUSINESS PAGE YOU CAN NOT UNDO IT!

FIRST DOWNLOAD YOUR INFO.  HERE’S HOW:

1) Log into FaceBook and in the upper right hand corner click account and than account settings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

2) Under “My Account’ go to the bottom and click “learn more” next to “download your info”

3) CLICK DOWNLOAD

Now that you’ve backed up your Personal Profile content, you’re ready to convert your Personal Profile to a Business Page. Once converted, you will use the same login information as before to access your Page, but now your account will be limited to a Business Account status only.

Here are the steps to convert your Personal Profile Page to a Business Page:

1. Go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?migrate.  Start by clicking one of the 6 boxes to find the best niche for your business.

TIP: You may want to try more than one section to find a tighter niche for your business.  Each box has slightly different niches.

2) Once you’ve picked a general “box” and niche now you can name the page.

VERY IMPORTANT TIP #1: Since this will be indexed and help with rank be sure to use your keywords in the title.  If you’re business name is “Betsy’s Pretty Posies” you might NOT want to use that since no one will be searching those terms.  ”Floral Arrangements by Betsy” might be better (without the “”).

VERY IMPORTANT TIP #2: Remember that the title has to be good grammar, no punctuation and do NOT use all caps, as an one of those things can get you banned.  Just put your keywords into a relevant, well structured title.

VERY IMPORTANT TIP #3: If you plan on using FaceBook ads now or in the future you especially want the title to be relevant to what you’re selling as it will be at the top of ALL your FaceBook ads.

That’s it…you’re done!  Once you go to the page it should populate with all your friends now showing up as “likes” on your business page.  If not, try refreshing the page.  You’ve also got your download to fall back on to fill in missing data.

IMPORTANT FACEBOOK CHANGE! READ THIS OR LOSE YOUR FRIEND’S/FAN’S POSTS!!

Maybe you’ve noticed that you are only seeing updates in your newsfeed from the same people lately? Maybe you’ve also noticed that when you post things like status messages, photos and links, the same bunch of people are commenting and all the others seem to be ignoring you?

Fear not, everyone still loves you and nobody has intentionally blocked you. The problem is that a your friend/fan list can’t see anything you post and here’s why:

This is just a another in the short list of changes FaceBook has been making.  They now have a newsfeed setting that by default is automatically set to show ONLY posts from people who you’ve recently chatted with or contact the most (which would be limited to the couple of weeks just before people started switching to the new profile). So in other words, for both business and personal pages, unless your friends/fans commented on one of your posts within those few weeks or vice versa – you are now invisible to them and they are invisible to you!!

HERE’S THE FIX:

Scroll down to the bottom of the newsfeed on the homepage and click on “Edit Options”

click on “Show Posts From”

change the setting to “All Of Your Friends and Pages”

Note: This is the fix for personal pages not sure the business pages are set up the same way so ck.

To let your friends know, you can’t just post an update about this because lots of your friends/fans already can’t see your posts by default.  Either send out a message to everyone on your list or post an event explaining the situation like this one and invite your entire fan base and/or friend list. However you do it pass the word through all your Social Sites.

Facebook Is Going To Take Your Likes And Comments And Turn Them Into Ads – What do you think?

The new Facebook privacy setting called “Instant Personalization” is being rolled out.  Great for marketers but how does it make you feel?

The new setting shares your data with non-Facebook sites and it’s AUTOMATICALLY set to “Enabled”.

If you want to disable it:

  1. Go to Accounts>
  2. Privacy Settings>
  3. Apps & Websites>
  4. Instant Personalization>
  5. edit settings &
  6. Uncheck “Enable”.

Google Takes Your Clothes Off!! Instant Previews is here.

Well, not literally but your blog or web site will now be exposed for it’s true colors… or lack thereof!

In case you didn’t notice, when you do a search now, there’s a little magnifying glass next to every link. If you click on that magnifying glass and then hover over the site you’re searching, you’ll see a “large” image of the site in all its “glory”…. or not so glorious.

This little device is Google’s “Instant Previews”! It used to be that you might have a few seconds to get someone’s attention and entice them to go to your site with clever words. Not anymore! Now you have a fraction of a second to get their attention and your site better pass muster! What does that mean for you? Here are some tips.

COLOR, COLOR EVERYWHERE!

You’ll notice when you browse various sites with “Instant Previews” the ones that pop out at you have color. You want your site to POP don’t you? Then you need DYNAMITE color! Not a lot of different colors but 1-3 should suffice make your site stand out. An eye toward design is the key. Don’t overdo it.

CLUTTER, CLUTTER EVERYWHERE!

Clean is better. If you’ve got a lot of clutter with advertising, boxes, bangles, left & right side bars, and on and one – DE-CLUTTER. Keep it clean and simple and easy to read.

NOW READ THIS!

Make sure you headlines and sub-heads are large enough and bold enough to be seen. You should be able to read your main headlines under this new “microscope”.

CONTENT IS GOOD BUT DON’T OVERDO IT!

Of course you want to be providing good content but you don’t want the page to look like one long paragraph with nothing but text! Keep paragraphs short, use QUALITY images and leave some white space! Images should be clear and strong – no cheap clip art! If you can’t see what it is in the thumbnail, get rid of it.

STRUCTURE FOR SKIMMERS!

The brain is an amazingly efficient processor.  Many people will just scan a page to see if it’s of interest  So again, make sure bullet points can be seen & embolden all key points down the page length to keep their interest.

The added advantage to doing all this is it will help format everything for mobile devices as well.  If you use word-press, an additional WP plugin to install to help format for mobile devices is “wp touch”. (it’s FREE!)

Remember you have less than a second now to grab a prospects attention and get them to click on your link instead of someone else’s so make sure you stand out in the sea of words!

Avoid Social Media Overload: it’s why YOU don’t have customers!

Ok, so you know you need Social Media Marketing.  You know you need to get set up on all the Social Media Sites.  So you start in – Buy the domain – get hosting – start setting up profiles on FaceBook, LinkedIn and the rest….you start but somehow it never gets done. You’ve heard you have to “SEO” your stuff properly or you won’t be found in a search.  SEO whaaat?  So you start to research that.  Then you hear about  Keyword analysis, content writing, usernames, passcodes, more & more, faster & faster, aaaaaaaye!  YOUR ON OVERLOAD!  Do you really want to start a new career in Social Media?  Find Help!

My strong suggestion (not just because it’s self-serving) is to hire someone that KNOWS what to do, do it for you!  That’s what I did in the beginning.  You have better things to do than than learn a new career right?! (How do you think I got My Social Media Matters started?!)  The cost is minimal compared to the time it takes to set up all this stuff correctly so that once it’s done you’ll hit the ground running and be driving new customers to your door.

Bear in mind you can spend all your time setting all this up but if you don’t know how to do the keyword research and search engine optimization (SEO) all your hard work is for naught.  You won’t be found by the search engines or your customers.  Hiring a pro gets the job done fast and you can be about what you do best – talking to prospective clients.

When you hire a Social Media Manager you should get some coaching included so you when it’s done you can use this powerful client finder to do just that – FIND NEW CLIENTS SO YOU CAN MAKE MORE MONEY!

DON’T LET PRICE STOP YOU!  I don’t know about other companies but I want to help you get this done so just ask about ways to make it more affordable for you.  Maybe spread the payments out or get by with less like concentrate just on FaceBook or Linkened in or your blog.  If you want it done, there’s always a way to get started.

Once it’s done it shouldn’t take you more than 20-30 minutes per day to maintain online business relationships and build the lasting networks you need to grow your business.

IF YOU MUST SET UP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA SITES YOURSELF, HERE ARE SOME TIPS:

1) Don’t try to do all the network sites. Pick ONE! Maybe one your already on like inside 919 or facebook or linkedin even twitter but pick one or two at the most that you’re comfortable with. There are tutorials on each site that will help.

2) Don’t just use it to socialize! Putting up your latest family pict or video or saying hi to your buddies isn’t going to bring you any business and it’s a huge time waster.

3) Each social media site has groups – even twitter. Find those groups that could use your products or service and START A CONVERSATION – DON’T START SELLING! Build relationships over a few weeks the make your “pitch”.

4) Don’t worry about keywords and SEO and all that for now. If you get involved in the social sites “community” you’ll bring in business over time.

5) Set up a blog. You don’t have to spend money, although there are advantages to hosting. There are free blog sites if money’s tight. Just start writing good content to help those you’re trying to reach and send everybody to that site. If you can’t write, “steal” the content legally from e-zines or articlefactory or some other article distribution site.

6) Above all have fun – don’t stress! It’s just another way to begin to establish friendships and loyal customers over time.

So don’t get “blogged” down in Social Media Overload trying to figure all this out.  Help is just a phone call, an email, a tweet, a FaceBook message, a LinkedIn message, a…..(you get the idea) away.

Social Media Marketing | Lessons from Christmas past!

It’s almost that season again – the rape of a holiday called “Christmas”.  So what does Christmas have to do with Social Media and what you need to build your business?  PAY ATTENTION AND YOU JUST MIGHT ‘LOIN SUMTHIN.’

Every Christmas we hear admonitions to “put Christ back in CHRISTmas!” Why? Because people realize that the TRUE meaning for many has been lost.  It’s become a marketing frenzy and seems to start earlier and earlier each year.

It’s no longer about family, fellowship around a table, food, laughter and a warm fire.  It’s pushing and shoving for that last minute deal; over-stuffing our credit cards instead of the kids stockings; getting pissed off when someone gets the last parking spot up front – it’s get me, give me, buy me, take me, do me….. “I need, I want, gimme, gimme, gimme, I need, I need, come on, gimme, gimme!” to quote from “What about Bob.”

We all long for something different, don’t we…deep down in our hearts?  Come on… you know you do!

THEN WHY DO WE INSIST ON APPROACHING SOCIAL MEDIA THE SAME WAY? We’re greedy and it’s all about “moi.” Example:

After I recently sent out a notification of my new blog, I got a “follow” request from a handful of people on twitter.  I was excited; “Wow, people are actually reading my stuff and want to connect.”  So I followed them back.  Within a few minutes I got the same damn auto-tweet back from ALL of them.  (The must all have the same Twitter manager and auto responder!)  WHAT A TURN OFF!  And guess what,  I’ll be “turning them off” as well!

Now I’m no prude and I understand why people use auto-reponders & automated software – I use them too – but for first contact with an individual, is that really necessary? Can’t we just have a back and forth REAL conversation?  Of course we can… and hence my point!  BE REAL… BE PERSONAL… BE APPROACHABLE… OFFER SOLID CONTENT and people won’t “un-follow” you like I’m going to do to those fools!

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING IS ABOUT THE “MARKET” NOT THE MARKETER OR THE MARKETING!

At my wife’s suggestion, I got out her 1828 dictionary and looked up marketing… err… not there… how ’bout marketer…  hmm… not there either!  So how ’bout MARKET!  Yes, big section on the market.

You see back in the day the Market was central to society.  People brought their wares… their products… to the “market” to sell, barter, trade, primarily with PEOPLE THEY KNEW – THEIR NEIGHBORS!  They were a trusted member of the community.

I’ve been a student of Marketing for over 40 years and think too many times we over- think things – over-sell, when simpler is better and works just as well.

I remember when I started my new career in Insurance and met my first client with a “big” portfolio.  I didn’t know enough to be clever & bullshit with them!  But one thing I knew how to do was LISTEN!  And I did… for hours!  But in the end I’d built enough trust that the lady gave me all her personal documents to take with me.  THAT WAS HUGE!  I did eventually “SELL” her but not before I’d built TRUST!

Social Media Marketing is no different – it’s just a new market, that’s all.  The conditions of doing business are the same; the way we build relationships is different.  Now we use Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn & other social media sites and communicate through the use of a keypad, video, podcast, pictures, posts, recordings and more.  But in the end the one who gets to take home the prize of new clients is the Social Media Marketer who has built trusted relationships by delivering quality FREE content consistently.

Please, don’t try to rush the process.  It will only do you more harm than good.  Take your time to interact, respond, be personal and personable and you’ll find in the end you’ll have more business than you can handle!
